The Power of Reflection: How Thinking Improves Learning & Performance - ft. Giada Di Stefano
A little bit of reflection goes a long way in maximizing what we learn from an experience. Giada Di Stefano outlines both laboratory and field experiments that show the unexpected power of reflection.
Her work shows how valuable it can be to the learning process and that in some situations it’s more beneficial than additional practice.
We work through her paper that outlines:
- the best strategies for reflection
- when reflection is most effective
- how we can use these strategies as individuals and leaders
This is a great episode for both learners and leaders.

    We can get to a point where we feel comfortable doing things we care about even if there is some uncertainty. I only say this because I don’t want people to think it’s totally impossible. By us doing that we block ourselves in the same way we did when it wasn’t possible for stress to be good. I speak this from experience of training thousands of soldiers, and from when explosions were going off around me multiple times while deployed, and I was able to keep cool. I can still experience stress from much less, like my reputation being on the line 😅, after all I am here, but I don’t want you or anyone else saying, “I’m always going to feel like this from that and I have no choice.” Of course, there’s nothing wrong with proper framing of stress though.

    5:01 This is an extremely dangerous mindset. This is called LABELING, to label those that don't agree with your theory as not thinking practice is useful, they backdown at challenges, get discouraged and get defensive/take feedback personal is absurd. The great entrepreneurs of the world, do you think they feel that way? The greatest pianist, do you think they feel that way? These fallacies cannot be taken as gospel. This is wild!

    This is BOGUS. I wonder why we don't have 50000 Einsteins in the world. A gift is a gift, someone can strive ALL they want, if they don't have the gift...you won't be an Einstein. This is a mentality of flattening the curve, lowering the standard. This will be another "theory" debunked.

    I am 57 and I have had a naturally optimistic viewpoint my whole life. However, I realized that over time I had developed a fixed mindset about myself in some areas. In particularly, in learning new skills. "As a Man (or woman) thinketh in his heart, so is he." -Proverbs 23:7 Powerful. Love this video which illustrates this so beautifully and practically.

    Growth mindset appears to link with positive self-fulfilling prophecy, as both encourage you to put more effort in towards reaching a goal. Some students might become disheartened, when seeing other students doing better than them, so they may stop trying. However, with a growth mindset, they will be motivated to keep trying to better their own grades. It will help them to become the best version of themselves.

    When we explore a new topic, we want it to meet three criteria: 1. It significantly impacts learning and performance 2. It provides value for most people in most situations 3. It can be easily and practically applied Today's topic ticks all three boxes in a massive way.

    I love the idea of reminding educators about how hard learning is. In the past you shared a story about a school who did an anti-talent show. The kids said the best thing theu got out of it was seeing their teachers struggle and fail. It made an impact on them because it showed the kids that even adults fail and struggle when they learn. I started encouraging my volleyball coaches to servw with their non dominant hands orginally for that point. Its great to know this practice can also give the coaches perspective on how hard these skills actually are for beginners. Thanks for the video Trevor ❤

    I think this is where the idea of great sports players struggle to coach effectively. It's hard for gifted players to explain what they're doing to new players because those players haven't really thought about how others grow. Causes a surprising amount of friction cause when new players ask "what they mean", the gifted players have no idea how to respond 😅

    I am almost 100% growth mindset but I also know that because of a diagnosed disability I cannot be a math person. I'm concerned that this might give people with certain disabilities false hope that hurts them further when they work extremely hard at something but cannot achieve it.

    • @kite9d3
      @kite9d3 19 дней назад

      I think growth mindset isn’t about “anyone can become a ___ person,” it’s more that “no one is a ___ person,” meaning skills are learned, it’s not that some people can just do it naturally. “I’m not a ___ person” is often just a convenient false belief that lets us off the hook from having to try ro learn or improve our skills. At the same time, it’s probably true that some people really can’t improve certain skills due to disabilities or other specific factors. Still, (maybe it’s just the growth mindset in me but) I would suspect even they can improve their skills 1 or 2% better than they currently are. Except in extreme cases, like someone without the use of their legs trying to learn skiing, obviously in some cases it just isn’t possible.

    • @kite9d3
      @kite9d3 19 дней назад

      Also, I think the whole idea of “a __ person” is part of a less helpful mindset. I find that the less I focus on who/what i AM and the more I focus on what i DO, the more helpful it is and the better results I get. Simple example - if I do something stupid, it’s much much easier to calmly observe what happened, forgive myself, and learn from it, if I acknowledge the *reality* that i DID something stupid, rather than telling myself the *story* that i AM stupid.
